The bottom attachment shows Loren melting the gold to start the piece. The second picture shows that the gold was poured onto a piece of carved charcoal so that it can cool and produce a bar or ingot. It may also be poured into steel mold called an ingot mold. Larger pieces require the ingot mold, smaller pieces may be poured into the charcoal block. The last picture attached shows Loren putting the ingot through the mill. This thins the gold to the desired thickness for the piece. It may then be cut and pulled through a draw plate if you want to have a round shape or half round, etc. With this particular piece, Loren wanted it almost square, so he didn't draw the metal down, he just cut the pieces.
